Police arrest 22 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Feb. 2 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Officers arrested 12 drivers in Kona, six in Puna and two in South Hilo, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in North Kohala and South Kohala arrested one driver in each district.

So far this year, there have been 125 DUI arrests compared with 115 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 107 major accidents so far this year compared with 106 during the same period last year.

Three fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday, police said. By this time in 2019, two people had perished.
